X-Fi Drivers for Linux x86

Finally! Creative finally came to sense and allowed somebody else than them to create open source drivers for X-Fi in linux, and this time even in 32-bit linux! Can you believe how happy I was? After half a year of waiting (and when it was supposed to come, it came to 64-bit ONLY?! What’s up with that?). So the first thing I did was so install amarok and listen to my music.. oh happy days.

Waiting for this as much as I have, well what are you waiting for? I have provided a download link for those who would like that.

  1. Yes! Finally the possibility for open source drivers, instead of waiting for Creative to develop closed source drivers. Now as Ati has opened the specifications for their cards and Creative has done so too I can finally see a bright future for alternative operating systems. Now if only Nvidia would release their specifications too (especially now that they bought Ageia PhysX) then we would have the possibility to support the most important parts of a computer entirely through open drivers (the exception would be WiFi chipsets). Dare we hope this is the beginning of a trend? :)

PS. Still no X-Fi support in ALSA, as good as OSS is I still prefer ALSA and can’t wait until they add support for X-Fi too.

  2. Yes. Big-shot companies need to realize that linux and open source is the future, sooner than later. Now with AMD and Creative giving after, I too hope to see if this has become a big enough trend so that Nvidia will respond as well.

I too like ALSA more than OSS, but OSS sound is better than no sound :) And it’s a great filler until ALSA comes with X-Fi support :D
