The Gathering 2008: One week later

Okay, It took me a week to post about my experience at The Gathering this year. As the title might have told, it has been almost one week since I left The Gathering 2008, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss it already, and I can’t wait for next year. The fuss about TG this year was that the government suddenly didn’t count TG as a cultural happening and demands VAT for ticket sales 2006, 2007 and 2008. Over 2 millions Norwegian kroner. What’s up with that? So we protested! (You should too!)

Anyway, entering the ship was phenomenal as last year. Meeting new people and old friends was cool. And quite some shows this year as well! I’m too lazy to write what happened every day, so I’ll just end with this: Can’t wait too next year. It’s really hard to explain as you must have been there to know how it was. I don’t know. If you’re curious, google it. Anyway, I got pictures this year! w00t!

Easter

You may already have noticed this, but easter came quite quick this year. In fact, easter hasn’t been this early since 90 years ago, and it will remain the king of the hill for another 277 years. So take note people! This will be a special easter for these generations to experience. Will TG08 be as special. Well, the big day is tomorrow, so we have yet to see. Time to start packing!

The seat has been taken!

Ok. Only 16 days or so left to The Gathering, the worlds second largest computer party event, taking its place as usual in Norway at Vikingskipet, Hamar. I will attend there as I did last year and I’m looking forwards to it already. There are so many things I need that needs be done, and I hope to do them before TG. Anyway, I have now gotten my seat, and this year I will be seated at row 44. which is a part away from the scene, but I’ll manage none the less. Not too many familiar faces with me this year, though more friends of mine are coming this year. Oh I can’t wait. Want to read more about TG, visit their site!

Linux Mint

After being an Ubuntu user for about a year now, I thought I should try this new distro based on Ubuntu, after I read a review about. And you guessed it, the new distro is no other than Linux Mint. As I said it’s based on Ubuntu, so no major change. But, there are some changes. The Update channel is better in my opinion with grades for the updates, are they safe or not? Other than that, there’s only one panel at the bottom of the screen, though this is easy to change.

The menu is different as well. You now got a more KDE-ish/Windows-ish menu that collects them all, though due to unstableness I switched back to the original Gnome menu. The reason I chose Linux Mint was because it basically was Ubuntu, plus more. The thing about Linux Mint is that it was meant as a multimedia distro for Ubuntu that comes with codecs and plug-ins etc. They say “from freedom came elegance” though I don’t really think the Linux Mint theme is too elegant, but that is as well easy to change.

From users that are used to the “Add/Remove” application in Ubuntu, you will be sorry to hear that there is no such thing in Linux Mint. However, you got a Software Portal which leads you to a page on the Linux Mint website, where you can download .mint files which allows you to install whatever software you downloaded the .mint file for. Unfortunately this database of software is not as huge as the one on Ubuntu and you may need to look some applications up yourself on the internet. None the less it’s a great distro which I would recommend to any Ubuntu users up for a change, or converters from Windows to Linux.

Linux Mint comes with some KDE software pre-installed, like Amarok, but unlike Ubuntu since Ubuntu is all Gnome and has only Gnome software pre-installed. It also comes with Envy pre-installed for automatic Nvidia or Ati graphic driver installation.

I need to test Linux Mint some more for the time being. You should too, even if you install it or just try the LiveCD, it’s worth the try.

Jumper

Jumper is one of those movies that makes you wish you had the powers the character in the movie had. In this case I did. I saw Jumper yesterday and it was cool. I won’t spoil (too much), but say so much that ‘jumping’ is teleporting trough space, leaving a jumping crack behind that closes eventually. Though you cannot jump trough time. And yes.. you can jump with something as a car or another person. Cool huh?

As a big disappointment lately, Jumper did not have anything at the end of the credits, unlike Cloverfield that did somewhat have something. This also gave me the idea of making a database (and with database I mean a post under projects or something) with what movies have something after the end credits updated after which movies I see.

Python S60

Good news! I found out that you can install python on your Symbian S60 phone. My N95 + PythonS60 = Perfect Match! I’ve made a really small and in a VERY early alpha stage program for S60, written in python. And it is my guessing game which I have also made in flash and on my Texas Instruments calculator. I will release this early alpha stage game under the projects tab, so go have a look and try it out if you want. Remember that you need to install python on your phone first.

X-Fi Drivers for Linux x86

Finally! Creative finally came to sense and allowed somebody else than them to create open source drivers for X-Fi in linux, and this time even in 32-bit linux! Can you believe how happy I was? After half a year of waiting (and when it was supposed to come, it came to 64-bit ONLY?! What’s up with that?). So the first thing I did was so install amarok and listen to my music.. oh happy days.

Waiting for this as much as I have, well what are you waiting for? I have provided a download link for those who would like that.

Four wheel drive

I finally got around to put on the last two wheels on my computer, and the outcome is as you can see on the picture to the left. It can now roll back and forwards. What a handy feature, right? Especially in a tight place like the one I have. Anyway, I think my HDD is happier now as it doesn’t have to spin sideways anymore. And everything worked out in the end. Click the image for more pictures (total 2).

Boundaries

I need to put some goals and boundaries on myself. So therefor from now on I am going to:

  • Do homework at least one hour a day
  • Code/design at least once a week
  • Update this blog at least two times a week

These should be enough goals for now. I will try my very best.
